Engines are built to perform at their best when a vehicle is in constant motion. Frequent stop-starting which is typical of city driving involves more decelerating, idling and accelerating. This causes pieces of metal to be abraded off critical engine part surfaces. An average motorist in the UK can stop-and-start up to 23,160* times a year, spending up to 31.5%* of their travel time idling.
(*Based on a study conducted in Manchester by Castrol in 2014)
When a vehicle is in idle, it strips oil from critical components (e.g. cylinders and pistons) that help the engine run. Operating the engine at slow speed exerts more pressure (up to 60% more than motorway speeds) on the bottom and top centre of the bearings. However, the faster the engine turns, the more evenly the pressure load spreads over the bearing surface.
Castrol Magnatec Stop-Start specifically protects the engine in busy traffic conditions by offering 20%* more protection from damaging stop-start wear. The fully synthetic technology contains intelligent molecules that cling to critical engine parts and form a layer of protection. When molecules are removed in the process of fighting wear, other molecules take the space to restore the protective layer. This helps protect engine surfaces at each critical stage of stop-start driving.
